TCM Modalities

Moxibustion is often applied as a thermal therapy in conjunction with acupuncture, which can be conducted either by direct contact of the skin or indirectly through a medium such as a slice of herb or simply air. The most common-used moxibustion methods are burning a moxa stick (similar to a cigar) at an acupoint, moxa cones placed at acupoints, or moxa flosses surrounding the acupuncture needle-handle. Presently, moxibustion is used according to individual preference of the acupuncturist. Other alternative substitutions for moxibustion are electro-moxibustion, infrared rays that are smokeless and convenient to use.
